Video file formats supported by Windows 10

Unlike previous versions, Windows 10 luckily supports almost all mainstream video file formats without the need to install additional codec packages or specialised players (though you can still do both of course). This is making video and audio playback problems more and more a thing of the past.

However even in Windows 10, we've seen cases where containers including WebM for web/Chromecast, 3GP, FLV, and MOD/TOD files recorded by digital camcorders were difficult or impossible to play due to unknown codecs in the container. You might have encountered similar problems with other video formats/codecs as well.

Windows 10 Video Formats

To prevent such issues, making sure that your file is in one of the following formats should get it to be recognised properly by the Windows 10 default video player as well as other Windows 10 apps that play back video. Windows 10 supports these containers and codec combinations out of the box without requiring additional codec packages.

How to convert videos for Windows 10

If you have a video file that is not in one of the formats above or is in one of the formats but does not include a video or audio codec known to Windows 10, you might need to convert the clip first before it plays as expected.

You can do so for free for up to 5 videos per month using our web app Clipchamp. It converts and compresses video files quickly – we recommend to use it in the latest version of Google Chrome for the best experience.

Converted videos are guaranteed to be recognised properly by any video player in Windows 10 and any Microsoft Office application. They often also become smaller thanks to our video compression, allowing you to store and use them more easily.

Clipchamp is used by millions around the world:

2. Select your video

Select or drag and drop the video you want to convert into the Convert my videos box.

3. Select your preferred output format

In the drop down menu, select the Windows setting to convert videos for Windows 10. The Windows output setting creates an ASF file (WMV video, WMA audio) and will get the video to work in Windows 10 as well as older Windows and Office versions.

NB – alternatively converting the video to the Web output option produces MP4 files that play fine in Windows 10 and newer versions of Office, however might not play in older Windows and Office versions.

You can also make changes to additional settings such as the conversion quality and output resolution by clicking on "Customize settings". If you're not sure which ones to choose, leave the defaults as they will create an output video that is suitable for almost any circumstance.

After making your selections, hit Startto convert your video.

4. Save and/or upload the video

While your video is converting, you can already queue uploads to YouTube, Facebook, Google Drive or Vimeo if you'd like to have the file uploaded to one of these platforms. You can of course also simply save it to your computer as soon as the conversion is finished.

That's how simple it is to use Clipchamp and obtain video files that will not cause problems in Windows 10 or any other version of Windows (if you use the "Windows" output option).

If you've ever struggled with video files in MS Office, we also wrote an article about converting videos for Office applications such as PowerPoint including a list of supported video and audio formats.

Lastly, if you're running into any other problems with your device, a quick fix is to try a Windows 10 system restore .
